On the few occassions I've been to the track, I observed it to be very common practice for drivers to swap tires left side to right side (and vice versa), or in other words, running the tires 'backwards'. I asked my instructor about it and she said it was no problem in the dry. Wet is not recommended or at least high speed driving in the wet is not recommended. The reason for it at the track is to save tire wear.
I ran mine backwards, in the dry, and had no ill effects at all. No performance difference.
