personally, I would say just get used to it... pertty much your only option if you just have to do something would be to add an extra resonator to the exhaust system. this would probably cost you as much as if you had to have a new muffler installed, but if you shop around you might be able to find someone to do it for under $200. I understand your dilemma… driving a car that makes too damn much noise is just not fun, especially on long trips on the highway. Fun for 1/2 hour, but NOT fun for 2+…
