Are there any write ups on swapping out shortblocks on the 9-5? What steps do I need to take (does the engine come out of the bottom?) Also, would a sludged motor with damaged rods need new heads?
The Saab way is out th ebottom with the subframe, but many have pulled it through the top ( and a few indy's do now as well) There was a write up on SC I will see if I can find it, for the oput the top method.
Well fair warning on the 9-5 and going out through the bottom. When you drop out the subframe everything out in front: radiator, condenser, intercooler, etc. will come dropping out with it.

actually anytime the techs here have done an engine job its been through the top. also they have done through the bottom as well and the intercooler, rad, etc they left in the car. they just use a clothe strap to hold everything in place.
i pulled the 9k motor out from the top, idk if its that easy with the 9-5. I didnt want to deal with unbolting the subframe. Those bolts are probably a PITA to remove
