Well, the thought sure had crossed my mind. I don't dislike the 99, especially with the "stage 3" ECU, aero suspension / clutch, and other bits. However I really like some of the features my car does not have... the newer aero HID's I like, though the plastic lenses I don't. I also really like the ass cooler seats, which my 99 could have had, but does not. Also, the sedan I don't mind that much, but would prefer a wagon... I also would prefer a light color, like silver or a pastel, but not white. The car has to be a manual. In-dash navigation is not needed, but would definitely be a bonus. SO I would have a fairly tall order actually if I got everything I wanted / preferred. There is also the added bonus of not having to install TSC onto my 99 in order to get an E85 tune to work since T7 suite is looking better & better.
So what I would want, would be an 02+ 9-5 Aero wagon, in a light color, manual transmission, ass-cooler seats, HID's, with nav in silver? Possible? Wonder what I could sell the 99 for, and have to bring to the table to get that car. Just sort of "thinking out loud" here, but I think that would be a rather nice step up...
best thing I did was to sell my 9-3 for an aero wagon. Do it.
although if you get picky like that, like I was, you may have to settle or wait a while for it to come up. I waited a few months and found mine in WA! the hardest part was getting it in manual. Luckily for you, silver is pretty common. Now if you want all that in glacier blue, I would say good freaking luck
I think you could find all that in an automatic without too much trouble. Now if you could find one with a damaged auto transmission, a manual swap project could be had for cheap I bet.
Well I am aware that it's not going to be a $5K car more than likely if it's still fully operational, but one with a bad trans is not out of the question. Trouble with that is that because they still have value, many people who own them would be far more willing to fix them for $3500 rather than take a $7000 hit in the price when trying to sell em.
I wonder how much it would actually cost me though? I think most people know I am fairly... "thrifty?" If I talk up the 99, I wonder if $4800 is not out of the question? It is a very nice running / driving car. everything works, new SID & ACC, no odd squeaks / rattles, great leather and all that, plus a manual trans, though I know that hurts the price rather than helps it realistically...
So I wonder what would I still need for a running / driving one if I sold the 99 for a reasonable amount? maybe $5-6K? (11K) cause I could probably swing that anyway without feeling like I spent a silly amount on it...

I think the car you desribe with 90k miles is about $9k....with lower miles you are looking upto $12k. A car like Dan's is pushing $18k plus still. So I think your 9-5 +$5-6k and you are in the realm.
Now a car needing work like a sludged motor or needing a trans is hit or miss. Sometimes people know selling a car in that condition means $1-2k, but sometimes they think it's still worth 5-6x more.
Truth be told, my '99 9-5 is the newest car I have ever owned. My other cars are from the mid-eighties. Sometimes I wish my car had some of the newer gizmos like the newer SID, HID headlamps, better hubs, seats with bolsters etc. But I'd rather just work on the old girl. She needs some suspension work (the Aero suspension is NOT cutting it) and with the Stage 3+ she was pretty quick (till I blew the turbo). When she's fixed I'm sure I'll be happy with her again. Maybe I am way too project oriented, but I can't justify buying the exact same car more than once? But then again my Saab is my daily driver, and she does a great job at that. I have other cars to nitpick about.
That's how I've always felt about my car, but I know what DeLorean is talking about too. As the newer models fall more and more in price, a nice step-up is very appealing.
Older hubs may flex some true - but bearings last easy 60-150K
Replacements are cheaper and not all that hard to do
New style hubs fail too - maybe not as frequent, but as often mileage wise.
Replacements are atleast twice as much..... yes they are easier to replace.
2001 does not have the Aero seats - however, who cares sometimes, nice ventilated leather is still nice ventilated leather!
I'd ask that sellers "Where are the correct Aero wheels for the vehicle?" And offer $1G less than the BIN if the car checks out good otherwise.
Might I just say the projector housings with HID's 9-5's came with are actually worse than the non projector housings by a long shot... You'd be better off just using the non projector housings with a pair of aftermarket HID's. As ridiculous as it sounds, I am not making this up. I have seen it first hand and the Valeo projectors in the 9-5's just plain suck.
I beg to differ... I've driven a facelifted 9-5 (clear lenses) with aftermarket HID's (6300k), and I can definitely see better with my stock 9-5 projector HIDs. And combine the "666 mod" (inner halogen with HIDs) and the highbeams are AMAZING.
That white aero is a nice one, but very close to the one I have, and white. I am not a fan of white cars, not so much the color itself, but how quickly it gets dirty.
I have seen quite a few 99's with the ventilated seats... not sure why but it seems like it was not that uncommon in 99. Mines not got em, but it does have heated rear seats & the smokers package, though it's never been smoked in.
The silver 03 looks real nice, tempting. No nav or ventilated seats, but I am not buying the thing new so can't choose the options. I would also be paying 1/4 the new car price... I doubt I'll get everything
I always think about upgrading to a 2004 9-5 Aero. I like the exterior front end a lot better than the '03's. Plus i want a color change...i like silver cars a lot.
Just wondering if i were to sell my car, what do you think i could get for it? I have a 2003 9-5 Aero sedan, 5-spd manual trans., 105k miles, new clutch replaced 3k ago, very option except for vented seats and navigational system. Just looking for a ballpark.
I picked up my 03 5-spd sedan last year. Found it in Tennesse. Paid 10,200 in October. It was a new car trade at a chevy dealer there. IT was lsited at 13,800 and the guy immediately came down to 11,500. I haggled a bit because it needed a front lip and driver side dimming mirror. It has everything except navi and I got it with 71K on it. It was so mint it looked new, never smoked in.
And I love the vented seats ( could live wtih ot HIDs though)
ANd it handles way better than the 2000, the new hubs are a big difference in feel.
I say be patient and look outside the area ( oh and mine is white the color I wanted) BUt of course I can keep it clean a bit easier than you ....
And with The DP Burnside sold me I am ready to go E85 in a few months.
yeah, I'll think about it for a little, Realistically I can always just wait longer, and they will be cheaper. The majority of owners with a 9-5 aero 5 speed wagon take good care of them so it should not be an issue if I wait till they come down a little cheaper and are higher in the mileage. Even used saabs have pretty rapid depreciation  There really is nothing wrong with my 99, and I hardly ever drive that... I think the damn thing might be emissions exempt this year cause I never drove it. Maybe if it ran on E85, I would find myself driving it more often.
Wonder what I could sell the 99 for, and have to bring to the table to get that car. Just sort of "thinking out loud" here, but I think that would be a rather nice step up...
keep us posted if you're able to sell it. i'm looking to sell mine and get a manual. mine is similar to yours - stage 3, aero suspension, 82k, but automatic. i'm curious about what i could get for it considering that it is modified. so if you're successful in selling yours, if you don't mind sharing what you're able to sell it for, please let me know.
I've been shopping myself for an "Upgrade" for the 9000 - and if I got a 5 Speed Manual 06' 9-3 Sport Combi 4 cylinder I'm talking about $14K for one off the block factory warranty For one with CPO it's going to be $15-$17K.... not too bad, but more than I have. I also want an 07' 6 speed manual - base model is fine, but more options the better - must be a 4 cylinder. You can get an 08' BASE 9-3 right now for about $24K if you know how to talk them down. (4 cylinder)

I just bought a 2005 9-5 Aero SC ... I still have my 1999 9-5 but I'm (obviously) not driving it now.
Huge differences between the cars, huge!
Plus I have a spoiler for it, all primed and ready to be painted body colour and installed.
