So I found this really nice 9-5 Aero on Craigslist last night, only half an hour away and 70k on the clock. I took a ride up there, car was immaculate as pictured. After two miles, the death chime went off in the dash and the oil light was staring me down. I whipped the car into the nearest parking lot and immediately killed the power. The pics tell the rest of the story:
Sure enough, the tech failed to notice the old oil filter gasket stuck on the housing before he put on the new filter.
i hope this was a dealer. I'd feel terrible if it was a private owner! Clearly not your fault, but I would just hate to phone up the owner, "uh, come get you car, its toast" or something along those lines.
The car was fine afterward and I went for a nice highway ride in it before trying to get the price down... $1k off was a bit of a big ask and where my 9-3 is on eBay for another 5 days, I wasn't going to plunk down a deposit just yet. Truth be told, I'm pining for a nice 5-speed convertible. I'm not gay, just looking for a car that would be nice for showing off AudioTroll
This is very easy to do. First oil change I did on my Aero, I made this very mistake...I've been changing oil myself for years and never had a gasket stick to the housing (I pre-lube the gasket, always). Anyway, it stuck and I spun the new filter on over it. started the car and looked under the car (I always watch for a little bit underneath after ANY oil change to make sure everything is kosher). Sure enough, I see a torrent of oil coming out of the filter housing and all over the ground. I shut the car off ASAP, spun the filter off and saw the culprit!
Now, I check the gasket every time, it's been stuck several times on the 9-5 now, even if I pre-lube the gasket prior to install.
That fail photo shall become one of the most epic fail photos ever. I couldn't help myself but bust up laughing when I saw it. Carl is deffinitely the man at finding a funny twist to everything.
I seriously do not understand how people manage this on the newer saabs. That filter housing is right there, staring you in the face!
Also, I always clean the mating face off each time I remove the old filter.
Other cars like the c900 where the filter housing is in a place where the face is not visible when the filter is off, I could see it happening...but on a 9000, ng900, og9-3 and 9-5?! Seriously?!
The same thing happened to me when I changed my oil last weekend minus the spyhunter oil slick. Put on the new filter, didnt notice the old gasket, started the car up, oil puked out everywhere!!
I'm glad I cought it right away. Man I felt like an idiot...
