Kind of loud (noticeable at least) whirring noise coming from engine.

Varies with revs. Can be heard from drivers seat. Does not sound like any pulleys or anything like that but I know how sounds travel. '95 Aero.

Does it come and go with the A/C on and off? Is it sort of whining sounding?

No, I have no AC. It's constant. Not a whining. It's lower pitch. More of a whirring. It can be heard at idle and while pulling away from a start on the road and in neutral.

Pulleys going away, or maybe rubbing on something?

Take the belt off and see if It is still there, also turn the pulleys by and to try and locate it

"A whining noise from the transmission during acceleration and deceleration can often be attributed to faulty pinion bearings in the transmission. Generally, what happens is that the bearings begin to get pits in them due to excessive wear or dirty transmission oil. Catching the pinion bearings prior to complete failure will result in less cost during a transmission repair!"

Ouch.

Can the transmission noise be there when the car is idling? Or does it happen only when the car is moving?

I didn't look into it at all today (other SAAB issues) but I really don't think it's the tranny. God knows I've had enough tranny issues and this is different. I'm going to change the oil in both the engine and the tranny anyway.

Got around to doing this just now. Removed belt and noise was gone. Since i initially thought it was the alternator, I checked that first. It was good. Next the power steering pump. There it was. Noisy while spinning. Gotta replace the pump. Going on vacation in the NH White Mountains in 10 days.

My PS pump is getting done next week. Noisy bastard, esp turning under load.

I still think it's the trans.*
